Book of the Month – May

May’s Book of the Month is Lois Lowry’s  award-winning Number the Stars. This work of historical fiction tells the story of a young girl’s heroism in the face of unspeakable evil. Annemarie and her best friend Ellen are typical 10-year-olds until the Nazi soldiers storm their town to “relocate” Jewish families. Annemarie must find the strength and courage to save her best friend’s life. Join us and read this suspenseful tale of bravery and hope.

*Book Club Meetings are generally held at 3:45pm on the last Wednesday of the month. This book club is for kids ages 9-12. Kids should come prepared to discuss the book.

Book of the Month – March

The Book of the Month for March is Mars Evacuees by Sophia McDougall. This is the first book in a new sci-fi series. Mars Evacuees tells the story of Alice, a girl who has to evacuate earth to join the Youth Defence Force on Mars. Told in the voice of a very sacrastic and funny twelve year old, this story is full of adventure, aliens, and space travel.  Join us and find out how Alice copes with life on Mars!

The Book of the Month for June is “Bridge to Terabithia” by Katherine Paterson.  “Bridge to Terabithia” is an Newberry award-winning book about two lonely children who create a magical secret kingdom in the woods.  This is a book about friendship, imagination, and struggling with “big” feelings. Read this wonderful classic book with our Book of the Month club members!

Our Book of the Month for November is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. This classic tale follows Milo and a watchdog, Tock as they explore distant lands full of comical puns through the mysterious phantom tollbooth. First published in 1961, The Phantom Tollbooth is an epic story of the joys of language and imagination that remains a favourite of many wordsmiths.

Our Book of the Month (BOM) for September is “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen!

Welcome the new school year with this classic Canadian novel.  On the way to visit his father, Brian’s single-engine plane crashes in the wilderness. Our Book of the Month (BOM) for November is a graphic novel!

“Binky: Under Pressure” by Ashley Spies is a hilarious comic book about a space cat, Binky, and his quest to rid his space station of alien intruders! Binky’s situation is made worse by the adoption of another space cat …who turns out to be his superior officer.

October Book of the Month

Piggybacking our successful September Book of the Month, the staff at the book bank have put ourselves in a Stink-y mood!

Our choice for October is another novel by Megan Macdonald about Judy Moody’s brother, “Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid.” In his first solo adventure, Stink experiences the frustrations of life as a 3 feet 8 inch tall boy …and being a younger brother to the bossy, Judy Moody!
